FRESNO, Calif.- When 105 football players swarm to campus Friday, head coach Pat Hill and his coaching staff are prepared to take the players through a myriad of meetings, seminars and exercises for the upcoming season.
Hill, who enters his 10th fall camp, has a meticulous detail to handling the players when they report to campus. Being organized and efficient is the key for Hill and his staff, who will give the young men an A-Z crash course in Bulldog football and the demands of being a Division I-A football players. Among the planned sessions include NCAA rules seminars, housing and campus regulations, academic paperwork, team rules and regulations and medical physical. All must be done before a player can even pick up a football.
`You have you be organized when they arrive," said Hill, who produces a comprehensive team manual and schedule for the players and coaches. "We have a lot to get in before they can take the practice field, so we need to do it in an efficient manner. Our coaches do a great job of keeping the pace and keeping the players moving from station to station. It sets a tempo with the guys that they need to stay on task and be ahead of the game. If they fall behind early, it's tough to catch-up, not only for the football field and competing for a starting spot, but for their academic success and life in general."
Hill will detail his expectations as it pertains to their academic responsibilities, health and training room services and strength and conditioning rules and regulations. It's the first chance for Hill to address the squad since last spring. He will discuss with them the way he expects the team to prepares for practices and games, expectation for the season, and team goals. The coaching staff will take the players through special teams, offense and defensive teaching sessions.
The team is scheduled to hold its first practice on Saturday at 9 a.m.
"The message will be clear to the team" Hill said. "Our expectation is to win. Nothing else is acceptable. We have a program in place that will be allow our players to success on the classroom and on the field. These meetings are the first step toward establishing our mindset for the 2006 season."
