FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State women's tennis coach Simon Thibodeau has announced the team's schedule for the 2007 dual match season. The schedule is highlighted by several top-25 programs including a date with 2007 NCAA National Champion Stanford.
The Bulldogs are coming off of a tremendous 2006 season in which they won their fifth straight WAC title, advanced to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament for only the third time in program history and earned a final national ranking of No. 20.
"This schedule will definitely prepare our team for the NCAA tournament," said Thibodeau. "We play a lot more Pac-10 teams in 2007 and the UNLV tournament in February is strong as well."
Fresno State opens the spring season in January with a hidden dual match in Berekely, Calif., that will serve as a warm-up for the season. Fresno State, California, Saint Mary's and Cal Poly will get together for three matches that will not count towards the dual match record. The 'Dogs will then head to Stanford to battle the top-ranked Cardinal to commence the 2007 year. Fresno State hosts WAC foes San Jose State and Nevada in a home-opener doubleheader to conclude the month of January.
The month of February will test Fresno State's mettle as the squad takes on some of the best programs in the country - all on the road. First, the Bulldogs take on the Sun Devils of Arizona State (No. 24 final ranking in 2006) and the Arizona Wildcats (No. 34) to start the month-long road trip. The 'Dogs will take their game to southern California to battle UCLA (No. 16) and Pepperdine (No. 14) the following weekend. And finally, Fresno State finishes up the moth with matches in Las Vegas against UNLV, Florida International (No. 35) and Long Beach State (No. 26).
In March, the Bulldogs will host Virginia Tech, Texas Christian (No. 15), Kansas Satate, Colorado and UC Irvine. Fresno Sate only two road matches in March will be tough ones - at USC (No. 3) and versus Harvard (No. 21) in Sacramento, Calif.
The Bulldogs will wrap up the regular season at home in April against Sacramento State, Cal Poly, Pacific, Santa Clara, Loyola Marymount and Saint Mary's before heading to the WAC Championships in Boise, Idaho.
Fresno State is 114-87 all-time against its 2007 opponents. The NCAA regionals will be held May 11-13 and the NCAA Championships May 17-26.
