Fresno, Calif. - Fresno State goaltender Angie Larsen was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week as announced today by the conference office. Larsen has now earned the award twice in the 2006 season.
Larsen, a senior from San Jose, Calif. tied a career-high, posting her seventh shutout in just the eighth game of the season for Fresno State, helping the No. 23 Bulldogs to their best start in program history. She held Portland State scoreless in a 2-0 win on Friday night before turning away nine shots against Sacramento State in a 2-0 victory. Among those nine shots was a penalty kick awarded in the 80th minute while Fresno State was playing with 10 players due to a red card.
This is the third time that Fresno State has had a player honored by the conference. Cortney Sobrero was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winner against No. 18 Florida, and Larsen was the initial Defensive Player of the Week after recording two shutouts in the first week of the year.
Fresno State continues a season-long four game homestand with two games this week. The Bulldogs begin tomorrow night with a 7 p.m. game against Pacific before hosting UC Riverside Friday at 7 p.m. Both games will be held at Bulldog Stadium.
