Strong Start for Fresno State at Bulldog Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - Many members of the Fresno State women's tennis team started strong at the first day of the annual Bulldog Classic, Friday at the Wathen Tennis Center. Sophomore Tinesta Rowe trailed early in the first set, but rallied to win 12 consecutive games. She got the 'Dogs going with her 6-4, 6-0 win over Nevada's Masako Horino in the round of 32.
Sophomore Bruna Paes won her first match of the day in the round of 32, defeating Jolanta Twarowska of Pacific 6-1, 6-3. Freshman Vanessa Heroux won her first match, defeating Dana Popescu of San Jose State, but dropped her second match of the day to Sacramento State's Joyce Martinez Gutierrez.
Newcomer Danon Beatty, a sophomore from Bakersfield, was impressive in her Bulldog debut. She topped Karina Jarlkaganova of Sacramento State in straight sets. Freshman Renata Kucerkova made a strong showing in her first outing for Fresno State. She beat Cara Schumacher of Pacific, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, Heroux and Rowe advanced to the quarterfinals, as did Beatty and Kucerkova.
The Bulldog Classic will continue on Saturday as the doubles quarterfinals get started at 8 a.m. Singles will begin at approximately 10:45. Admission is free.
