Rowe Impressive After Two Rounds of California Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore Tinesta Rowe felt right at home after upsetting 53rd-ranked Sabrina Capannolo of Arizona State, Friday at the California Invitational in Berkeley, Calif. Just four months ago, Rowe clinched Fresno State's victory over California in the second round of the women's NCAA tournament. Friday, Rowe went 2-0 in singles and 1-1 in doubles with sophomore Danon Beatty on the Golden Bears' home court.
"Tinesta really played with a strong, competitive spirit today," said assistant coach Chantel Wiggins.
Rowe began the day with a straight set victory over Jenna Kappel of UC Davis. In her second singles match of the day Rowe toppled Capannolo in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.
Beatty defeated Casey Knutson of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-0, in the round of 32, before dropping her second match of the day to Arizona State's Roxanne Clarke in a tough three set battle. Both Rowe and Beatty played in the Gold Singles bracket that features fifth-ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor of Cal and the Golden Bears' 12th-ranked Suzi Babos, the 2006 NCAA singles champion.
Junior Jacqueline Haskett defeated San Francisco's Joana Macedo in the Blue Singles round of 32. In the round of 16, Haskett fell 6-2, 6-2, to second-seeded Clair Ilcinkas of Cal.
Rowe will play Cal's Nina Henkel at approximately 11 a.m. PST on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
Sophomore Melanie Gloria and freshman Renata Kucerkova are participating in the 2006 Women's Riviera/ITA All-American beginning this weekend in Pacific Palisades, Calif. Gloria is already qualified for the main draw, while Kucerkova will begin in the pre-qualifying rounds, facing Katy Williams of Long Beach State on Saturday at 12:15 p.m.
