FRESNO, Calif. - The Preseason NCAA tennis rankings have been released and the Fresno State women's tennis team sits at No. 21.
The Bulldogs finished the 2005-06 season at No. 20 in the Fila ITA rankings, going 20-7 in dual matches and advancing to the sweet sixteen of the NCAA tournament.
Despite losing standouts Lucia Sainz and Katharina Winterhalter to graduation, the Bulldogs return five women including sophomore Melanie Gloria. The Bulldogs have also added three solid players: freshmen Renata Kucerkova and Anastasia Petukhova and sophomore Danon Beatty.
Gloria enters the rankings at No. 4 in the country. She was a national finalist at the ITA All-American last October and was a semifinalist in both the ITA Regional and the Indoor Championships. Kucerkova had a solid fall season and earned a No. 49 preseason ranking. Sophomore Tinesta Rowe comes in ranked at No. 92.
Fresno State begins the year at No. 1 Stanford on Jan. 26 before coming home to host San Jose State and Nevada on Jan. 28 in a doubleheader.
