Bulldogs Beat Lions, 5-2

FRESNO, Calif. - Freshman Mirko Zapletal won in three sets to clinch Fresno State's 5-2 victory over visiting Loyola Marymount, Friday afternoon at the Wathen Tennis Center. Zapletal defeated LMU's Nikola Petrov in No. 2 singles and improved to 6-4 overall and 2-0 in dual matches. Fresno State improved its record to 2-0 while LMU fell to 1-2.
Despite losing the doubles point, the Bulldogs rallied to win five of six singles matches for the victory. Sophomore Rudolf Siwy and senior Charles Irie won 8-5 at No. 2 doubles, but LMU took a 1-0 lead after winning in both No. 1 and No. 3 doubles.
Irie got the 'Dogs going with a straight set victory at No. 4 singles. Irie improved his overall record to 10-3 and 2-0 in dual matches. Irie has also won both of his doubles matches in dual match play this year.
Freshman Tejesvi Veerepalli broke a 1-1 tie in the team score with a straight set victory at No. 5 singles, while Siwy followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win in his singles match.
Senior Jakub Cech got back on track, winning in the third-set tiebreaker to complete the match. Cech improved to 8-4 overall and 1-1 in dual matches.
The Bulldogs host Nebraska on Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center. A note to fans and media, this match was originally scheduled for 1 p.m. but was moved up to 10 a.m.
