Fresno, Calif. - The 2007 Fresno State Baseball team opened its annual exhibition game against the Alumni, defeating the former Bulldog team by a score of 2-1 Saturday, January 27 at Beiden Field. Current Major Leaguer Jeff Weaver who signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners made the start for the alumni, throwing one inning, and allowing two hits. Junior Brandon Burke made the start for the 2007 Bulldogs, throwing four innings, striking out three batters and not allowing any hits or runs.
Solid pitching highlighted the evening for the 2007 Bulldogs as the Alumni only recorded five hits in 32 at bats. The Fresno State 2007 squad had a total of 36 at bats and recorded 10 hits.
In the fifth inning sophomore Erik Wetzel singled and advanced to second base on an error. With Wetzel at second sophomore Danny Grubb knocked in the first RBI for the Bulldogs taking the lead 1-0. The Alumni would not score until the seventh inning when Nick Moresi hit a home run to left-center field.
The game would go into extra innings with the game tied at one a piece. In the bottom of the tenth inning junior Ozzie Lewis singled off former Fresno State Alumni Chad Edwards. He would also advance to second base on a failed pick off attempt. With the next at bat junior Steve Susdorf would double down the left field line and Lewis would score with the 2007 Bulldogs defeating the Alumni 2-1.
Quite a few pitchers for the 2007 Bullogs saw some action which included sophomore Tanner Scheppers, sophomore Rashad Tucker, junior Jacob Hower and sophomore Holden Sprague.
Announced last night at the Double Play dinner at Pardini's was the extension of contract to head coach Mike Batesole which included a four year deal through 2010. Under Batesole the Bulldogs took home the WAC Championship in 2006 with an 18-6 conference mark and a 45-18 overall record, the best Bulldog finish since 1988. He has compiled a career record of 390-263-1 and has a 141-83 record at Fresno State.
The Fresno State baseball team opens up its season next Friday against non-conference series opponent San Francisco with game time at 6:05 at Beiden Field. The game will be carried on KMJ 580 and can also be followed online at www.gobulldogs.com.
