FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior forward Nicole Gutierrez was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week for her performances last week against UTEP and Cal-State Fullerton.
Gutierrez helped lead the Bulldogs to a 1-1 record by recording a hat trick in a 3-2 win over UTEP on Friday. Her goals came in the 24th, 54th and 84th minutes. Gutierrez is only the fourth Bulldog player to record a hat trick. Jill Pearson did it three times and had a four-goal game against Weber State September 17, 2000. Cheryl Gano netted three goals three times and Cortney Sobrero did it twice.
The junior forward also added a goal in Sunday's loss to Cal-State Fullerton. She is currently second in the WAC in goals (6) and shots (29).
"Nikki had a great weekend scoring four goals for us," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "Friday nights game vs. UTEP was probably the best single-game performance by a forward since I have been coaching here. It is great to see the WAC recognize her for her play this past weekend."
"Join the State - Fresno State!" -The Fresno State Soccer team will celebrate Youth Soccer Day when they take on San Francisco in Bulldog Stadium on Sunday, October 7 at 2 p.m. After the game, the team will host a postgame autograph session. Tickets are available at the Bulldog Ticket Office or by phone at 559-278-DOGS.
