Gutierrez Scores Seventh Goal of Season

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team scored first but it was Hawai'i who tallied the final two goals to beat the Bulldogs 2-1 on Sunday. The loss dropped Fresno State to 6-6 and 1-1 WAC play while Hawai'i improved to 9-3-2 and 2-0 in league play.
"It was a hard fought game," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "We battled and had chances at the end. Hawai'i is a good team. They play hard at home."
Neither team had many shot opportunities as the Rainbow Wahine had six shot on goal attempts to the Bulldogs four.
Fresno State jumped on the scoreboard in the 11th minute when Nicole Gutierrez scored on a pass from Chelsea Davis. The goal is Gutierrez's seventh of the season.
Hawai'i tied the match at 1-1 in the 25th minute when Ambree Ako connected on a penalty kick. Ako then scored the go-ahead goal in the 37th minute off a throw in from Lehua Wood.
Neither team generated many opportunities in the second half as Fresno State had only two shots and Hawai'i had only four.
Although the Bulldogs were unable to put the ball in the back of the net, Springthorpe said he was happy with his team played.
The Bulldogs return home to host Louisiana Tech on Friday, October 19. Kick off is at 3 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
