Bulldogs Advance in Regionals Consolation

FRESNO, Calif. - After the third day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regional Championships, the Bulldogs remained alive in the consolation rounds. Fresno State took some tough losses in the main draw, as all three Bulldogs fell in the round of 32. Fresno State will continue play in the consolation rounds on Saturday at the University of Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif.
Sophomore Tejesvi Veerepalli won his second straight match in the consolation rounds, defeating Bruno Alcala of 7-5, 7-6. Sophomore Taylor Leiby won the first set 6-2 before UCLA's Ahmed Ismail retired in the second.
Fresno State had three players in the main draw round of 32, but were not able to advance. Sophomore Mirko Zapletal fell to 75th-ranked Claudio Christen of Arizona and junior Rudolf Siwy lost to San Diego's Dean Jackson.
Denny Fafek had his streak of two straight wins snapped after losing to Jack Hui of UC Santa Barbara in straight sets. In doubles, Veerepalli and Zapletal lost 8-5 to No. 55 Beidas and Lemke of Pepperdine.
Veerepalli, Leiby and sophomore Flavio Mollinedo will continue on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m.
