FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Rudolf Siwy is just one win away from qualifying for the Intercollegiate Athletic Association's All-American. Siwy chalked up another straight-set victory on Tuesday, beating Mississippi's Jakob Klaeson 6-3, 6-4 in Tulsa, Okla.
Siwy trailed 2-0 and 3-1 in the first set before winning five consecutive games to take the opening frame. In the second set, Siwy broke serve at 4-4 and then served for the match.
"Rudy got off to a slow start, but he settled down and started to play his game," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "In the second set he played with a lot of hunger and confidence. We're definitely looking forward to tomorrow's match."
Siwy will play 114th-ranked Reid Carleton of Duke on Wednesday at 9 a.m. CT (7 a.m. PT) for the right to enter the All-American's main draw.
"I'm excited about my next match," Siwy said. "I felt I played well today and coach Udwadia helped me make some key adjustments to get the win."
Udwadia said the conditions were windy, but Siwy played a clean match and stayed tough.
Siwy opened the qualifying rounds with a straight-set defeat of New Mexico's Graeme Kassautzki on Monday.
Siwy is one of six returning members of men's tennis team and is the only upperclassman on the squad.
The rest of the team will open the 2007-08 season this weekend at the annual Bulldog Classic. The event runs Oct. 5-7 at the Wathen Tennis Center and admission is free.
