FRESNO, Calif. -The Fresno State women's tennis team is on a roll, flexing its muscles and cutting down national-power Stanford in the process after two days of competition at the Northwest Regional Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Junior Tinesta Rowe upset No. 9-ranked Celia Durkin of Stanford in three sets during the round of 32 and then beat No. 113 Ekaterina Burduli of Washington State to reach the quarterfinals.
"It was a great day for the Bulldogs and its a good sign for the rest of the season," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "Tinesta came out very strong and never gave up. Stanford is very difficult to beat, especially on its home court."
The Bulldogs had three singles wins over Stanford and one victory in doubles. After two days, Fresno State is 22-6 at the Regional Championships.
Second-seeded and third-ranked junior Melanie Gloria and sophomore Vanessa Heroux met in the round of 32. Gloria beat Heroux 6-3, 6-2, then downed Stanford's Hilary Barte 6-2, 6-1. Gloria improved to 4-1 on the season.
Sophomore Anastasia Petukhova was solid again on Saturday, picking up two wins in singles. She beat Oregon's Anna Powaska in straight sets, then followed with an efficient 6-0, 6-2 defeat of Stanford's Whitney Deason. Sophomore Renata Kucerkova won in the round of 32, before losing to Stanford's Carolyn McVeigh in the round of 16.
Petukhova faces top-seeded and fourth-ranked Susie Babos of Cal in the quarters on Sunday. Gloria will battle Cal's Bojana Bobusic while Rowe takes on Cristina Visico, also of Cal.
Gloria and Rowe were dominant in their 8-1 defeat of Brady and Markhoff of Cal Poly in the doubles round of 16. Kucerkova and Petukhova also won in impressive fashion, defeating Stanford's Deason and McVeigh, 8-2.
Doubles competition is scheduled to get underway at approximately 9:30 a.m.
