FRESNO, Calif. - As the Bulldogs prepare for Friday's game against WAC rival Boise State, a Fresno State player was rewarded for his performance last week against San Jose State.
Kyle Zimmerman, a senior from Visalia, Calif., punted four times for a 49.8-yard average in Fresno State's 30-0 win over San Jose State. He was named the Western Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. It marked the second time this season a Bulldog has won that award. A.J. Jefferson was honored after his performance against Nevada. He had a career-long punt of 61 yards and downed two inside the Spartans' 20-yard-line, including one at the four. San Jose State entered the game 10th in the nation in punt returns but didn't have a single return against the Bulldogs.\
"Kyle continues to perform well for us and we are happy the WAC has recognized his performance," said head coach Pat Hill. "Kyle has worked hard and been a great part of our program the last three seasons."
With his performance, he took over the WAC lead in punting and ranks No. 33 in the NCAA with an average of 42.6 yards per punt. His ability to down punts deep in the opponent's territory has been impressive this season.
Other WAC honors today went to Nevada running back Luke Lippincott as offensive player of the week and New Mexico State defensive back Davon House for defense.
Bulldogs Ryan Mathews and Marcus Riley were nominated for their performance against San Jose State. Mathews ran for 144 yards and two touchdowns while Riley spearheaded a stingy Bulldog defense that shutout the Spartans for the first time in 65 years.
