Fresno State vs. Boise State
Bulldog Stadium
Batman Strikes Again
Senior Clifton Smith's 65-yard punt return in the first quarter was the fifth of his career, breaking the all-time Bulldog record. Smith had previously shared the record with Phil Borjas (1971-72). It was his second return for a touchdown this season. He needs one more for the single season record, held by Borjas in 1972. He is one shy of the all-time WAC record of six set by Hawaii's Chad Owens (2001-04). Smith finished the game with four returns for 95 yards and improved his Fresno State career record punt return to 18.0 (42-757 yards). Smith's nickname it Batman, his favorite superhero. Smith has worn the same Batman t-shirt under his shoulder pads since high school.
Batman on the Ground
Smith had 53 rushing yards in the first quarter, surpassing his best day a runner. His previous best was 50 yards on the ground in the season opener against Sacramento State. He had his 53 yards in just two rushing attempts, one a 36 yard run that set up Fresno State's first touchdown. He finished the game as the Dogs' top rusher with 65 yards and averaged 13.0 yard per tote.
Mr. Touchdown
Bulldog freshman Ryan Mathews scored his eighth touchdown in the last four games with a 5 yard first quarter run. Mathews was the national leader in touchdowns by a freshman coming into this weekend.
Clutts Adds to His Sack Collection
Tyler Clutts made his 22nd career sack late in the second quarter against Tyler Tharp. That sack moved him into sole possession of fifth place in the Bulldog record books, passing former All-American Alan Harper (1998-01). Clutts is fourth among NCAA among active players, 1 ½ sacks behind UCLA's Bruce Davis.
Mark of Marcus
Senior linebacker Marcus Riley continues to have an excellent season, adding 12 tackles, three of them for losses against the Broncos. Riley leads the Bulldogs in tackles and had had double-figures in tackles in five of Fresno State's eight games. Riley has 80 tackles on the season, ranking among the WAC's best.
Moore's Back
Sophomore Marlon Moore, who was Fresno State's leading receiver before an injury that sidelined him for two games, caught a touchdown pass, the first by Fresno State since the Louisiana Tech game. Moore joins tights ends Bear and Vince Pascoe and fellow receiver Jason Crawley with touchdown receptions this season.
