FRESNO, Calif. - A 22-match winning streak finally came to an end on Wednesday. Sophomore Anastasia Petukhova had not lost since March 15 until North Carolina's Sanaz Marand defeated the Bulldog sensation 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the final round of qualifying at the All-American in Los Angeles.
It was also Petukhova's first lost of the season. She is now 7-1 this year with a career record of 31-4.
The All-American main draw begins on Thursday, and junior Melanie Gloria will look to better her performance of last year. Gloria reached the final, narrowly losing to Cal's Susie Babos in the third-set tiebreaker. But Gloria has reached as high as No. 2 in the country and will be a major factor in this year's run for the title.
Gloria, third-ranked in the country, is also the tournament's No. 3 seed. She will face 19th-ranked Vanja Corovic in the first round on Thursday.
Gloria and junior Tinesta Rowe will compete in the main draw of the doubles tournament. Gloria and Rowe are currently ranked No. 11 in the country and have played with some of the best doubles teams. Last year, Gloria and Rowe trailed then-No. 3 Miller and McCray of Georgia Tech before winning six straight games to win the match and help the 'Dogs take the doubles point during the NCAA Round of 16.
