FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team will host its annual Bulldog Classic this weekend at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. Players from 13 different schools will participate in the three-day event that runs Oct. 5-7.
Along with Fresno State, Cal, Cal Poly, UC Davis, Fresno City College, Fresno Pacific, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento state, San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara and Washington will compete.
The tournament includes three flights of singles and two flights of doubles.
Sophomore Mirko Zapletal enters the tournament as the No. 1 seed in the top flight. Zapletal was last year's team MVP after posting an outstanding freshman season. Zapletal gets a first-round bye and will face either Santa Barbara's Alexander Konigsfeldt or Pacific's Vegerd Veskimagi in the round of 16.
Freshman Denny Fafek and sophomore Tejesvi Veerepalli will also participate in the top flight for singles. Sophomore Flavio Mollinedo is the second flight, while sophomore Taylor Leiby and freshman Siddharth Alapati will be in the third flight.
Veerepalli had a strong showing last year, winning the Flight B draw in singles. Friday marks the first collegiate matches for newcomers Alapati and Fafek.
Competition is scheduled to get underway at 8 a.m. at the Wathen Tennis Center. Admission is free.
