FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Rudolf Siwy won three matches in the qualifying rounds at the All-American earlier this week to qualify for the main draw. His reward was a first round matchup against No. 11 Oleksandr Nedovyesov of Oklahoma State. Nedovyesov beat Siwy 6-3, 7-6 (0), but not without some fight from the Fresno State junior.
"Rudy battled the whole match," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "He really started to play some good tennis in the second set and cut down on his errors."
It was the first loss of the season for Siwy and he didn't let it faze him. Siwy bounced right back with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sascha Heinemann of Hawai'i in the first round of consolation play. Siwy improved to 4-1 on the season after the victory and advances to the next round in the consolation bracket.
Udwadia said Siwy is getting an opportunity to play some solid players at the tournament. The winner of the consolation bracket earns a spot in the National Indoor championships scheduled for Nov. 1-4.
