FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team hosts the University of San Francisco on Sunday at 2 p.m. Sunday is also Youth Soccer Day and a crowd of 3,000 or more is expected as the Clovis Youth Soccer League purchased 3,000 tickets for Sunday's non-conference match.
This is the sixth meeting between the two schools. San Francisco leads the overall series 3-2. The Bulldogs have won two of the last three meetings, including a 2-0 victory last year at Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State also defeated the Dons' 2-1 on September 2, 2001 at USF.
The Bulldogs are 4-5 and coming off a week where they beat UTEP 3-2 and lost to Cal-State Fullerton 3-2. Fresno State was sparked by the play of Nicole Gutierrez who had a hat trick in the win over the Miners and added another goal against Fullerton. For her performance, Gutierrez was named WAC Offensive Player of the Week on October 1.
"Nikki had a great weekend scoring four goals for us," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "Last Friday's game vs. UTEP was probably the best single game performance by a forward since I have been coaching here. It is great to see the WAC recognize her for her play this past weekend."
Gutierrez leads the Bulldog offensive attack with six goals and two assists. Ali Sill has two goals and four assists while Amanda Reyes has three goals and two assists.
Despite the Dons' 0-6-3 record, they have played an extremely tough schedule as four of their losses have been against teams ranked in the Top 30 by soccerbuzz.com. USF lost to No. 1 Stanford, North Carolina (No. 14), UCLA (No. 4) and Duke (No. 28).
The Dons' are led by the play of Fiona O'Sullivan who has one goal and one assist while Samantha Brand has two assists. San Francisco played at UC Irvine on Friday.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" -The Fresno State Soccer team will celebrate Youth Soccer Day when they take on San Francisco in Bulldog Stadium on Sunday, October 7 at 2 p.m. After the game, the team will host a postgame autograph session.
