Bulldogs Capture Singles and Doubles Titles

FRESNO, Calif. - Heading into the final day of competition at the Bulldog Classic, Fresno State was guaranteed at least one title. The Bulldogs captured the Flight 1 doubles title and got one more championship in the Flight 3 singles final. on Sunday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Sophomores Tejesvi Veerepalli and Mirko Zapletal outlasted freshman Denny Fafek and sophomore Taylor Leiby 8-6 in the doubles final. Each team opened the match by breaking the other. Veerepalli and Zepletal then broke and held to take a 3-1 advantage. The sophomore combo maintained its lead and led 7-4 while serving. But Fafek and Leiby broke and then held to cut the deficit to 7-6. But top-seeded Veerepalli and Zapletal hung on to capture the 8-6 victory.
Freshman Siddharth Alapati captured the Flight 3 singles title in the first tournament of his collegiate career. He beat Cal's Nicolai Horgen 6-2, 6-4 and was 4-0 overall this weekend in singles.
"I really wanted to get a good start to the season," Alapati said. "I was happy with my performance this weekend and I felt very confident. I moved well on the court and I won a lot of the long and important rallies throughout the tournament."
Veerepalli also played in the flight A consolation final. He beat Washington's Derek Drabble in straight sets during the semis, then lost hard-fought match to San Diego's Charl Wolmarans 6-3, 3-6, (10-8) in the final.
The Bulldogs will hit the courts again next week at the Western Regional Championships in Malibu, Calif.
