FRESNO, Calif. - The two-time defending Western Athletic Conference Champion Fresno State baseball team released its 2008 schedule last week. The Bulldogs have eight season series with WAC opponents as it all leads up to the 2008 WAC Tournament in Ruston, Louisiana May 22-25, 2008.
The Bulldogs won the WAC Championship in 2006 and 2007, earning the automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals. Both years, Fresno State played in the Regional Championship game, falling to perennial powerhouse Cal State Fullerton.
Fresno State opens the season hosting UC Davis at Beiden Field for a four-game series starting on February 22, including a double-header (Feb. 23). This season the Bulldogs will play a total of 10 double-headers, excluding the Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament, up from just the two Fresno State had the season prior.
The Bulldogs then have non-conference games on the road at Cal, San Diego, Cal Poly, San Diego State and Santa Clara. Fresno State has a combined record of 319-208 against the first six opponents of the season.
The Indiana Hoosiers will play two games in Fresno, (March 8-9) and then stay to play in the 30th Annual Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament (March 10-15).
Indiana and Fresno State have never met in any head-to-head competition in the history of the two schools athletic departments. Also participating in the Pepsi Johnny Quik are Utah, Portland, Gonzaga and New Mexico State.
It's back on the road for the Bulldogs as they play the first of two games of the season at San Francisco (March 18, April 30) then open up WAC play at Hawai'i (March 20-22).
Fresno State returns home for two non-conference games with Cal Poly and the home opening WAC series with Nevada to end March play.
The only game against Long Beach State in 2008 is April 1. The Bulldogs then hit the road to play Cal for the second time (April 2) and Cal Poly (April 9).
Louisiana Tech and Fresno State meet for the only regular season WAC games between the two, April 11-13.
The final match of the year between Cal Poly and Fresno State is April 15 in San Luis Obispo. Fresno State then travels to New Mexico State to take on the Aggies for four games in Las Cruces (April 18-20).
Two non-conference games between Santa Clara and San Francisco round out home play in April before the `Dogs travel to Nevada for four conference games (April 25-27).
May 2 the Aggies from New Mexico State return to Beiden Field for four games. The Bulldogs and the Aggies will meet more than any other two teams in the regular season, with a home-and-home series and the Aggies appearance in the Pepsi Johnny Quik Tournament.
The final non-conference game of the year is at Long Beach State (May 6). Fresno State will then host San Jose State to close out 2007 play at Beiden Field. The last regular season series will be at Sacramento State (May 16-18). The Hornets compete in the Big Sky Conference for most sports, but join the WAC for baseball.
The top six teams in the conference standings at the end of the regular season will be invited to play at the WAC Tournament (May 22-25) in Ruston, La. The winner of the tournament will earn the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament which begins May 30 with regionals and end with the NCAA College World Series in Omaha, Neb., June 13-21.
