FRESNO, Calif. - Grant Doverspike led the Bulldogs at the Pacific invitational at the Brookside Country Club on Wednesday. Doverspike finished strong with a third round of 66 to take second place with 14-under par. Doverspike carded three rounds of 68-68-66 - 202 to finish three strokes behind the individual leader Stefan Wiedergruen of Charlotte.
"Grant played great and it took an All-American from the No. 1 team to beat him," said Mike Watney. "Brad also played great for another top-20 finish in such a good field."
The Bulldogs (280-280-283 - 843) placed in fifth place out of 14 teams to conclude the tournament 21-under par. Charlotte (824) moved ahead of Kansas State (826) with the low third round of 271. Marquette (836) placed third and Oregon (837) took fourth place. Wiedergruen birdied his last three holes to win the tournament for Charlotte and to take the individual title over Doverspike.
"This is the lowest under par I have finished," Doverspike said. "I didn't really feel pressure the whole tournament except for holes 16 and 17 because there was a big lake I had to hit the ball over. On my last few holes I knew I had to get further under par then the other leaders. I didn't see a scoreboard and I didn't want coach to tell me until my last hole, I just knew I had to get birdies."
Doverspike finished the round on holes 7, 8 and 9 with a birdie on hole 7. Doverspike also had an eagle on the fourth hole to complete his second bogey free round of the three-day tournament.
"I killed a drive on the par 5 on 170 yards with a 7-iron," said Doverspike on his eagle shot. "I hit it dead straight and then hit a good putt to make it."
Brad Wyatt placed in the top-20 finishing 6-under par. Wyatt tied for 17th place with 71-67-72 - 210. Michael Gideon (71-71-75 - 217) and Matt Ryan (70-77-70 - 217) tied for 42nd place with 1-over. Todd Angel (72-74-76 - 222) took 57th place to round out the Bulldog line-up.
"It was a solid finish," said Watney. "We could have done a little better but we feel pretty good finishing up the fall. We are going to continue to improve this year, and I think this team is going to get better and better."
Steven Bidne of Northern Colorado had a hole-in-one Wednesday on hole 12.
The men's golf team concluded the fall season and will take the next few months to prepare for the spring. Go to gobulldogs.com for all your information on Fresno State men's golf.
