FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team is hoping to repeat some of the same magic the team had when the WAC soccer tournament was last held in Boise, Idaho. In 2005, the Bulldogs finished in a four-way tie for second place in conference with a 4-2-1 record but went into the tournament at Boise State as the No. 5 seed after the tie breaker procedures.
Fresno State went on to win the tournament and a bid to the NCAA tournament for only the second time in school history.
With the tournament back at Boise State this year, the Bulldogs once again tied for second place in the conference with a 5-1-1 record but they lost the tie breaker on a coin flip to Boise State. The Bulldogs open the first round of the tournament on Thursday at 2 p.m. against sixth seed Nevada. The two teams played four days with the Bulldogs coming out on top 3-1.
"I think we are playing well right now," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "We are scoring a few more goals and doing ok defensively. We are playing some of our best soccer right now. I am happy where we finished. As far as the seeding goes, it is the luck of the draw. We are going to have to do it the hard way and win three matches. We had to do it the last time we went to Boise. I feel confident that we'll go in and play well. The tournament is more wide open this year than it has ever been."
If the Bulldogs win on Thursday they will play No.2 seed Boise State on Friday at 2 p.m.
Fresno State finished the regular season with an 11-6-1 mark. Nicole Gutierrez led the Bulldogs offensively with 10 goal and five assists while Amanda Reyes had nine goals and two assists. Reyes scored five goals in her in final three matches.
For the second straight week, freshman goalkeeper Kaity Revel was named WAC Defensive Player of the Week. Last week she came up with nine saves and had an assist in wins over Cal-State Bakersfield and Nevada.
