BOISE, Idaho - For the two teams battling in the 2007 Roady's Humanitarian Bowl, the first day of activities didn't include anything that resembled a football.
The Fresno State Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets spent the afternoon in a friendly game of bowling to benefit charity. The two squads also enjoyed some old fashioned western barbeque near the Boise River in a dinner hosted the gracious Roady's Humanitarian Bowl Council.
The Bulldogs arrived in Boise at 11:45 a.m MT and were welcomed by a beautiful Rocky Mountain day. While the Treasure Valley has seen snow over the last couple of days, and more snow in the forecast, Thursday was a breathtakingly sunny day with temperatures approaching 35 degrees,
The first order of business for the Dogs was a bowling tournament against the Yellow Jackets at the Meridian Lanes. The offenses of each team squared-off against the opponent's defenses. Georgia Tech beat Fresno State 239-201, but the real winners were charitable organizations on Boise, Atlanta and Fresno. The event was sponsored by Certified Angus Beef, which donated two pounds of beef for each pin to non-profit centers in each city. The Dogs were playing for Fresno's Poverello House which means 402 pounds of ground beef will be shipped to that Valley organization.
"It was a great event and great fun for our players" said head coach Pat Hill, who himself bowled two frames that added to Fresno State's score. "It was nice to get together with Georgia Tech. They are a first-class bunch. It was great to be able to use our limited bowl skills to help charities and especially for the Poverello House back in the Valley to help the homeless of our community."
The teams then took part in a Western Welcome Barbeque dinner before return to their respective host hotels.
Friday's schedules will return to football with some fun mixed in. Each team will practice at Bronco Stadium and take part in a Winter Sports Day at nearby Bogus Basin Ski Resort. The teams will be enjoying the snow and participate in some winter activities, including tubing down the slopes.
Fresno State will take to the blue turf of Bronco Stadium at 2 p.m. for practice.
On Friday evening, the teams will be together again for the Certified Angus Beef Bowl Dinner at the Owyhee Plaza Hotel.
The Dogs and Yellow Jackets play on Monday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. PT. Fresno State is making its eighth bowl appearance in the last nine seasons while the Ramblin' Wreck is in a bowl for the 11th straight year. Over the next three days, the teams will participate in many planned activities leading up to the bowl game.
