Bulldogs Top Arkansas, Stay Perfect at Home

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's tennis team breezed past Arkansas 6-1, Friday evening at the Wathen Tennis Center. Head coach Jay Udwadia, a graduate of Arkansas, beat his former coach as the Bulldogs improved to 4-3 on the season.
Freshman Mirko Zapletal clinched the win for the Bulldogs, defeating Andrei Nicoara in straight sets at the No. 2 spot. Zapletal improved to 5-2 in singles.
Fresno State took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Freshman Taylor Leiby and sophomore Rudolf Siwy beat Nicoara and Williams 8-4 at the No. 3 spot. Senior Charles Irie and freshman Tejesvi Veerepalli trailed 5-0 to Villinueva and Vlaskin. But the duo rallied and eventually won 9-7, clinching the doubles point.
In singles, Irie was dominant at the No. 4 spot, beating Bradwin Williams in straight sets. Siwy followed with a straight-set victory of his own just before Zapletal clinched the Fresno State win.
Veerepalli won his sixth consecutive match, beating Dmitry Vlaskin in a super-tiebreaker. Veerepalli improved to 6-1 in singles, playing primarily at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Flavio Mollinedo won his second consecutive match, beating Dimitry Lebedev 6-3, 7-6 (7).
Fresno State has won two straight and stayed perfect at home after the victory. The Bulldogs will now turn their attention to a doubleheader with Pacific on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. in the Wathen Tennis Center.
