Bulldogs Fall Short to Mustangs, 6-3

San Luis Obispo, Calif. - The Fresno State baseball team dropped their third game of the season against non-conference opponent Cal Poly at Baggett Stadium by a score of 6-3 on Tuesday night. With that loss the Bulldogs move to 1-3 overall.
Tanner Scheppers received the start for the Bulldogs as he threw three innings allowing seven hits and striking out one. Eric Otterson would come in to relieve Scheppers throwing 2.1 innings allowing no hits and no runs.
Steven Fischback earned the start for the Mustangs throwing five innings allowing five hits and two runs. Andrew Slorp would relieve Fischback and throwing two innings allowing three hits and one run.
On a brisk cool night, Fresno State jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning with a one run lead. In his first at bat of the game Ozzie Lewis ripped a hard ground ball up the middle rolling to the center fielder for a single. He advanced to second on a balk and to third on a wild pitch. Lewis would score on a sacrifice fly by Tom Mendonca.
The Mustangs answered back in the bottom of the second inning with two runs of their own. In the next two at bats Cal Poly would record back-to-back triples by Brent Morel and Bryan Kepner. Morel got the Mustangs on the board first, tying the game at one a piece. Cal Poly scored its second run when Adam Buschini singled up the middle bringing in Kepner at 2-1.
The Bulldogs scored one run in the top of the third when Steve Susdorf recorded his fourth RBI of the season on a single to right field knocking in Todd Sandell.
Cal Poly rallied in the fourth inning connecting on four straight hits with three singles and one double. With one out Logan Schafer walked and advanced to second after Grant Desme singled down the right field line. In the next two at bats a single and double were recorded scoring two runs for the Mustangs. With Morel on second and Dorrell on third Kepner singled deep to right field knocking in two more runs. The inning would end with Buschini hitting into a double play. Cal Poly led Fresno State 6-2 in the bottom of the third.
The Bulldogs scored their last run of the game in the seventh inning with Sandell scoring from third on a Loren Storey ground out to Cal Poly second baseman. Fresno State had a chance to do some damage with the bases loaded but ended up grounding into a double play to end the inning.
Fresno State recorded nine hits in 33 at bats while Cal Poly recorded seven hits to 29 at bats. Ozzie Lewis and Tom Mendonca went went 2 for 3 with two singles. Todd Sandell went 2 for 4 with two singles.
Fresno State will play in a three-game series against Stanford starting Friday, February 9 at Sunken Diamond with the first pitch at 5 p.m. The following games will be on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
