Bulldogs Drop Game Three Against Santa Clara, 8-4

FRESNO, Calif. - On a bright Sunday afternoon the Fresno State (8-12) Bulldogs found themselves in an early 4-1 hole in the bottom of the second inning against the Santa Clara (13-11) Broncos that they could not find their way out of as they went on to lose by a final 8-4 score at Beiden Field.
Santa Clara jumped on the board in the top of the first inning with two base runners on when Gabe Alcantar reached on a fielder's choice scoring the first run. The second run 2-0 came in when Ryan Conan doubled to left field. The Bulldogs got out of the inning on a fly out to right field.
With two errors recorded by the Bulldogs in the top of the second inning the Broncos scored two runs on one hit to put the score at 4-0
Right fielder Ozzie Lewis scored the first run of the game from third base when Tom Mendonca hit a sacrifice fly to right field at 4-1.
Fresno State scored its second run of the game 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brian Lapin singled up the middle scoring Mendonca from third base.
The Bulldogs cut the Broncos lead by one at 4-3 when Mendonca tripled deep to center field and was knocked in with a Brian Lapin single up the middle.
Santa Clara answered back with four runs in the top of the seventh inning when Matt Long hit a home run for the first run and three more came in on a balk and a single up the middle with an 8-3 score.
The Bulldogs scored one more run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make it an 8-4 final score.
Fresno State combined for a total 12 hits on 36 at bats with four walks.
Fresno State will take on the Iowa Hawkeyes in a two-game series Monday and Tuesday before heading into the Pepsi-Johnny Quik. The first pitch against the Hawkeyes will be tomorrow at 6:05 at Beiden Field.
