FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State (11-13) Bulldogs kicked off its 29th annual Pepsi-Johnny Quik tournament in fashion taking down Iowa (3-4) by a score of 4-2 Wednesday night at Beiden Field. Justin Wilson (2-2, 3.96) started on the mound for the Bulldogs throwing six innings allowing five hits on two runs. Nick Erdman (1-0, 4.50) grabbed the start for the Hawkeyes and threw six and one-third inning allowing four runs on nine hits.
To begin the game the Hawkeye's grabbed the first lead of the game in the top of the first inning scoring one run when Kevin Hoef singled up the middle. The last out of the inning struck out looking.
With the bases loaded the Bulldogs grabbed the lead in the bottom of the second inning scoring a run on a ground out and on a bunt from Erik Wetzel.
Iowa tied the game up at two a piece in the top of the third when Travis Sweet singled to right field scoring Jason White from third base.
Fresno State regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning at 3-2 when Ryan Overland hit his first home run of the season to right field. The Bulldogs also scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Loren Storey put down a sacrifice bunt bringing in David Hernandez.
Fresno State tallied ten hits on 30 at bats while Iowa tallied six hits on 31 at bats. Erik Wetzel went 3-for-4 with two singles and one double. David Hernandez went 2-for-3 with two singles.
Brandon Burke saw some action and relieved Wilson last night throwing three innings only allowing one hit. Burke earned his first save in his three innings pitched.
The tournament will continue tomorrow night in a game featuring Fresno State taking on Dallas Baptist in a 6:05 p.m. contest at Beiden Field.
