Bulldogs Power Past Patriots, 9-5

FRESNO, Calif. - In the second game of the annual Pepsi-Johnny Quik tournament the Fresno State (12-13) Bulldogs took down the Dallas Baptist (11-9) Patriots by a 9-5 score Thursday night at Beiden Field. Junior right handed pitcher Clayton Allison ( 3-2, 4.09) earned the start and threw seven and one-third innings allowing two runs on four hits.
The Dallas Baptist starting pitcher Jordan Meaker threw six and two-thirds innings allowing two earned runs on six hits.
The Patriots scored the first run of the game on a home run to left field 1-0 in the top of the first inning but Fresno State answered in the bottom of second when Steve Susdorf hit his third home run of the season to tie the game up at 1-1.
Fresno State took a three run lead at 4-1 when Brian Lapin hit his first home run of the year with two other runners on base.
Hitting his fourth home run of the year Susdorf knocked another out over the right-center field wall scoring three total runs to go up five at 6-1.
Another run scored on a home run from Dallas Baptist for a 6-2 score in the bottom of the seventh inning. Fresno State was not done scoring as it recorded one run on a sacrifice fly from Erik Wetzel and two runs on a double to right field from Susdorf at 9-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Dallas Baptist did not give up as they recorded three runs in the top of the ninth on three hits and two errors by the Bulldogs.
Susdorf went 3-for-4 on the night with two home runs and one double. He also came one home run shy of tying a Fresno State individual batting game record of three. Brian Lapin went 3-for-5 with one home run and two singles. A total of five home runs were hit by both teams last night.
The 29th annual Pepsi-Johnny Quik Classic will continue tomorrow night with the first game beginning at 2:05 p.m. between Iowa and Dallas Baptist. The second game will feature Fresno State taking on Iowa in a 6:05 p.m. contest at Beiden Field. Fresno State leads the all-time series against Iowa (3-0).
