Fresno, Calif. - Head soccer coach Steve Springthorpe has announced that Chris Shaw will join the Fresno State soccer program as an assistant coach, joining Springthorpe and Christine Johnson to round out the staff for 2007. Shaw comes to the Bulldogs after spending the last three years as the head women's soccer coach at Division II Mount Olive College in Mount Olive, North Carolina.
"I'm thrilled that Chris will be joining our program," said head coach Steve Springthorpe. "Chris brings a wealth of experience and professionalism that will only strengthen our program and help our team to continue to succeed in our conference and at the regional and national level."
Shaw comes to Fresno State with an extensive soccer background. While leading the program at Mount Olive, he was named the 2004 CVAC Coach of the Year after setting a Division II record for a single-season turnaround, taking a program that had gone 3-15 the previous year to a 20-3 record, leading the nation in scoring offense during that season.
Balancing academics and athletics, Shaw led Mount Olive to their first conference championship in program history, and also helped the team receive the 2004 NSCAA Team Academic Award. Prior to working at Mount Olive, he spent four years as the head soccer coach at Pine Forest High School in Fayettteville, N.C., guiding both the men's and women's programs. In addition, Shaw was the head coach of two N.C. ODP girls programs and spent last season as a head coach in the USL PDL for the Atlanta Silverbacks.
A 1994 graduate of Methodist College, Shaw was a two-time All-Conference member and earned All-America honors as a senior in 1993. After graduating, he played professionally for the Raleigh Flyers, and then earned his masters degree at East Carolina University before returning to Methodist as the men's assistant coach.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to be involved with an established program," said Shaw. "Fresno State is already one of the best teams in the WAC, and I'm looking forward to being a part of that tradition."
