Bulldogs At Beiden To Face New Mexico State

On Deck Fresno State (23-19, 8-4) will continue WAC play at Beiden Field against New Mexico State (17-21, 4-8) beginning with the first game at 6:05 on Friday. The following two games will proceed on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. and Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

In The Hole Next week the Bulldogs will travel Tuesday to take on the Santa Clara Broncos at Stephen Schott Stadium. The weekend series will follow as the Bulldogs will take on non-conference opponent Cal Poly at Beiden Field before heading into their last three conference series.
Scouting New Mexico State The New Mexico State (17-21, 4-8) Aggies finished with a 19-36 overall record and a 6-18 (7th place) mark in the conference last year. Head coach Rocky Ward is in his eighth year and has compiled an overall 204-244 record.
Last Meeting Fresno State faced New Mexico State last year in 2006 and took two out of three games by scores of 6-3, 10-7 and losing 9-8.
New Mexico State Offense The Aggies are led offensively by junior catcher Joe Leghorn who is hitting with a .402 batting average reaching second base nine times, tallying one home run and 24 RBI's. Second on the list is sophomore outfielder Joseph Scaperotta who is batting with a .366 average advancing to second base 15 times, third base three times and marking eight home runs. Junior Marcus Quade is hitting with a .366 average and he also has nine doubles but leading the team with 38 RBI's.
New Mexico State Pitching On the mound the Aggies are led by Brian Gausman who has compiled a 6-1 record with a 3.73 ERA. In 72 and one-third innings pitched he has 25 walks and 70 strikeouts. The Bulldogs may also see Dillon Smith who has a 3-2 record and a 7.82 ERA. Another probable starter is Noah Garza who has a 2-3 record with a 8.12 ERA. He has 34 walks and 15 strikeouts in 37 and two-thirds innings pitched.
Wetzel While You Work Sophomore Erik Wetzel is leading the Bulldogs with a .361 batting average connecting on 57 hits in 158 at bats. Wetzel has six doubles and two triples and 19 RBI's on the season.
Clutch Performers Loren Storey and Erik Wetzel lead the team with a .500 batting average with runners in scoring position. Storey is 18-for-36 and Wetzel is 16-of-32.
Ozzie Coming on Strong Right fielder Ozzie Lewis is coming on strong for the Bulldogs as he has connected on seven hits in 14 at bats grabbing three doubles, two home runs and two walks.
Home Run Leaders Senior leader Loren Storey hit his seventh home run of the season to tie game three at three a piece against Hawai'i. The Bulldogs went on to win 4-3. Freshman Tom Mendonca also has seven home runs. Todd Sandell, Steve Susdorf and Alan Ahmady both have six on the year.
Clayton is Clicking Clayton Allison has the best record for the Bulldogs in the bullpen with a 7-3 mark and a 4.26 ERA. This last weekend he recorded his seventh win against Hawai'i.
Just Wilson Last weekend Wilson threw seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits. He marked a season high eight strikeouts in a game against Louisiana Tech 3/24/07.
Breckley Brings It Junior right handed-closer, Jason Breckley has seven saves on the year. This has moved him tied for fifth in the record books for the Bulldogs in single-season saves. Bobby Jones holds the record with 11 set in 1989. Brandon Burke has three saves on the year.
Overall Pitching In 42 games as a team the Bulldogs have posted a 4.42 ERA with 23 wins and 19 losses. Fresno State has let 229 runs cross the plate on 182 earned runs. There has been a total of 163 walks and 294 strikeouts. The Bulldogs have given up 69 doubles, 11 triples and 30 home runs.
Storey and Susdorf Own the Base Pads Senior speedster Loren Storey leads the Bulldogs in stolen bases with 16 on 18 attempts. Junior Steve Susdorf is second on the list with nine stolen bases in 8 of 10 attempts. Erik Wetzel is fifth on the list with five.
Fresno State vs. Opponents The Bulldogs are batting with a .291 average compared to their opponents who are hitting a .287 average. In 1,411 at bats Fresno State has connected on 411 hits compared to an oppenent who has 1,461 at bats connecting on 229 hits. Fresno State also has 69 doubles, 13 triples, 42 home runs and 235 RBI's compared to the opponents who have tallied 69 doubles, 11 triples, 30 home runs and 203 RBI's.
Fresno State vs. UC Davis On a Tuesday afternoon at James M. and Ann Dobbins Stadium the Fresno State (21-18, 6-3) Bulldogs defeated the UC Davis (11-18) Aggies by a 4-3 score. The Bulldogs had 12 hits on day while UC Davis compiled 13. Fresno State defeated UC Davis earlier this year at home by an 8-2 score. Fresno State now leads the all-time series 30-9. Alan Ahmady went 2-for-3 on the day with two singles, two RBI's and one walk.
Sizzling Scheppers In seven innings pitched last week Tanner Scheppers has only allowed two earned runs on eight hits and in two of those starts and he has enlisted a 2.57 ERA with five strikeouts and one walk.
Red Hot Pitching In the past five five game the pitching staff has totaled 39 strikeouts, 19 walks and 21 runs. The staff has a combined 4.42 ERA in the past five games.
Bulldogs Sitting Pretty Fresno State currently sits in second place in the WAC with a 8-4 record. Louisiana Tech has a 9-3 conference record and holds first place. The Wolf Pack of Nevada has a 7-5 record in the conference and is stationed in third place. The Bulldogs currently have two, three-game home series at home yet to face New Mexico State and Louisiana Tech. In the two non-conference away series Fresno State will play San Jose State and Hawai'i. The last two conference three-game series at the end of the year may be the most important.
Hawai'i vs. Fresno State - Game One In the first game of the series Fresno State (21-19, 6-4) fell short by one run at 9-8 to the Hawai'i (25-13, 6-4) Rainbows Friday night at Pete Beiden Field. Hawai'i and Fresno State are now tied for second place with a 6-4 record in the WAC. The Bulldogs were led by shortstop Todd Sandell who went 3-for-5 with one home run, two singles and one RBI. Ozzie Lewis went 2-for-4 with one home run and one double.
Hawai'i vs. Fresno State - Game Two In a double header scheduled for today's action the Fresno State (22-19, 7-4) Bulldogs came out victorious in the first game by a 6-5 score against Hawai'i (25-14, 6-5) at Beiden Field Sunday afternoon. Continuing his dominance on the mound Justin Wilson (4-4, 3.38) threw seven innings only giving up four runs on nine hits. He also struck out five and walked one.
Hawai'i vs. Fresno State - Game Three In a double header scheduled for today's action the Fresno State (23-19, 8-4) Bulldogs came out victorious in both by a 6-5 score in the first and 4-3 score in the second game against Hawai'I (25-15, 6-6) Sunday afternoon at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs now sit in second place in WAC standings behind Louisiana Tech who has a 9-3 record and 29-14 overall.
