Fresno, Calif. -
Fresno State track and field welcomes back the past and brings back a memory of past rivalries as the Bulldogs host UC Davis in a single dual meet on Saturday, April 28, while welcoming back their alumni for the weekend. Admission is free for the event, which begins at 12:30 with the women's hammer throw.
The event itself will be a showcase of a throwback meet, consisting of a two-team collegiate scoring event without any unattached athletes, meaning that each school will be presenting their best athletes in an attempt to defeat their Central Valley foe.
The field events will also feature a new twist, as the events will run in what the coaching staff has termed "the final countdown." In all of the field events, all contestants will receive three attempts. Following that round, the top eight performances will move forward, then the top four, and finally a true finals will occur with the top two athletes in each event will face off head-to-head. "The final countdown is a concept that we are using to bring focus and fan interest to each field event," said head coach Bob Fraley.
Each team will receive two scores per team event, tallying the top marks for their team score in the head-to-head team competition.
The April 28 weekend will also feature Alumni Day, as the Bulldogs welcome back any and all track and field alumni to the event. The meet's opening rally, scheduled for 2:40 p.m., will include alumni and special introductions. Additionally, long-time coach Red Estes will welcome alumni to a barbeque hosted by Coach Red and his wife Myrna. The cost is 15 dollars per person, and reservations can be made by contacting alumni committee members Reyna Hill or Bob Fraley.
