Bulldogs To Face Non-Conference Opponents

On Deck: Fresno State (26-19, 11-4) will participate in five non-conference games this week having two away and three at home. The Bullogs will play the first game against Santa Clara (20-21, 6-6) on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium and the second game against Stanford (16-20, 2-10) in a make-up contest this Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. start at Sunken Diamond. The final contest will conclude with a three-game series against Cal Poly. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. and the last two games scheduled for a 6:05 p.m. start on Saturday and a 1:05 p.m. start on Sunday.

Games can be followed live on the web with Gametracker, provided through Fresno State's official website, www.gobulldogs.com. Paul Loeffler with KMJ 580 will also be in attendance calling the action for the games against Cal Poly.
In The Hole:
Next week the Bulldogs will travel to San Jose, Calif. to take on San Jose State in a three game series. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series against the Spartans 134-66.
Scouting Santa Clara:
Santa Clara (20-21, 6-6) finished last year with a 28-26 overall record and a 9-12 (fifth place) finish in the West Coast Conference last year. Head coach Mark O'Brien compiled a 139-139 record in his six years.
Last Meeting:
Fresno State faced Santa Clara four times this past year and lost three of the four contests. The Bulldogs won the second game at home 8-7 but lost the remaining three away 3-2, at home 4-1 and home 8-4.
Santa Clara Offense:
Offensively Santa Clara is led by Tommy Medica who is batting with a .385 average reaching second base six times and third base three times. Gabe Alcatar is second on the list hitting with a .349 average advancing to second base 13 times, knocking out two home runs and notching 24 RBI's. Another key player to watch for is Matt Long who is batting with a .327 average grabbing six doubles, one home run and 15 RBI's.
Santa Clara Pitching:
In the first game the Bulldogs faced Donald Brandt who now has a 3-2 record with a 4.71 ERA. In 36 and one-third innings pitched he has given up 23 runs on 42 hits walking 16 batters and stiking out 20. The second starting pitcher Fresno State saw was Nate Garcia who now has a 3-5 record with a 6.14 ERA. In 63.0 innings pitched he has given up 45 runs on 71 hits while also striking out 52 batters and walking 27.
Scouting Stanford:
Stanford (16-20, 2-10) finished last year with a 33-27 overall record and a 11-13 (fifth place) finish in the Pac-10 conference. Head coach Mark Marquess is in his 32nd year. He finished last year with a career total of 1,257 wins, 617 losses and five ties.
Last Meeting:
The Bulldogs faced Stanford twice this past year and had been rained out in one. Fresno State lost both of those contests by scores of 9-2 and 6-4.
Stanford Offense:
Key leaders for the Cardinal include Adam Sorgi who is second on the team with a .351 batting average reaching second base five times and grabbing 10 RBI's. Sorgi has started in 20 games. Third on the team is Joey August who has connected on 32 hits with a .305 batting average. He has three doubles, one triple, one home run and 17 RBI's.
Stanford Pitching:
One of the starting pitchers Fresno State faced last time and may see again is Jeremy Bleich who now has a 1-7 record with a 5.32 ERA. In 67 and two-thirds innings pitched he has given up 42 runs with 23 walks and 38 strikeouts. The second pitcher the Bulldogs faced was Nolan Gallagher who now has a 2-5 record with a 7.09 ERA. He has given up 41 runs on 55 hits.
Scouting Cal Poly:
Cal Poly (21-20, 8-4) finished last year with a 29-27 record and a 10-11 (fourth place) finish last year. In five years head coach Larry Lee has compiled a 130-98-2 record.
Last Meeting:
The Bulldogs faced Cal Poly earlier in the year and lost 6-3.
Cal Poly Offense:
Offensively the Mustangs are led by Grant Desme who is batting with a .395 average. He has 12 doubles, one triple, 12 home runs and knocked in 47 RBI's. Second on the list is Brent Morel who is batting with a .315 average leading the team with 12 doubles, two triples and five home runs.
Cal Poly Pitching:
In the last meeting the Bulldogs met Steven Fischback. He has now compiled a 1-2 record with a 6.59 ERA. Two other probable pitchers the Bulldogs are listed to face is Thomas Eager who has a 7-2 record with a 3.32 ERA. In 89 and one-third innings pitched he has given up 41 runs with 35 walks and 74 strikeouts. Fresno State may also face Mark Nobriga who has compiled a 2-3 record with a 5.37 ERA. In eight games started he has given up 34 runs on 62 hits with 19 walks and 32 strikeouts.
Sizzling Scheppers:
In seven innings pitched last week Tanner Scheppers has only allowed one earned run on five hits. He now has a 3-3 record with a 5.02 ERA.
Red Hot Pitching:
In the last six games the pitching staff has totaled 56 strikeouts, 18 walks and 21 runs. The staff also has a combined 2.83 ERA.
Bulldogs Sitting Pretty:
Fresno State currently sits in first place in the WAC with a 11-4 record. Louisiana Tech has a 10-5 conference record and holds second place. The Wolf Pack of Nevada has a 7-5 record in the conference and is stationed in third place. The Bulldogs currently have one, three-game home series at home against Louisiana Tech. In the two non-conference away series Fresno State will play San Jose State and Hawai'i.
New Mexico State vs. Fresno State - Game One
Fresno State (24-19, 9-4) seized their twenty-fourth victory over New Mexico State (17-22, 4-9) Friday night at Beiden Field. The Bulldogs were led by Clayton Allison (8-3, 3.84) who threw seven innings only allowing five hits. Allison also struck out a season and career-high nine batters. Fresno State also captured its first shutout of the season.
New Mexico State vs. Fresno State - Game Two
The Fresno State (25-19, 10-4) Bulldogs defeated the New Mexico State (17-23, 4-10) Aggies by a 14-3 score in the first double header at Beiden Field. Justin Wilson threw seven innings allowing two runs on four hits. He tied a season and career-high eight strikeouts.
New Mexico State vs. Fresno State - Game Three
In a double header for action the Fresno State (26-19, 11-4) Bulldogs captured their second victory by a 9-1 score against the New Mexico State (17-24, 4-11) Aggies Saturday night in front of 1,778 fans at Pete Beiden Field. Freshman Tanner Scheppers threw seven innings only allowing one run on five hits. He struck out a season and career-high 11 batters. His prior season high of six strikeouts recorded April 4 against Nevada. In the series sweep Fresno State totaled 31 strikeouts and only eight walks.
