Bulldogs Fall to Broncos in WAC Final

BOISE, Idaho - The Fresno State men's tennis team battled but fell to No. 23 Boise State 4-0, Sunday afternoon in the final of the WAC tournament at the Appleton Tennis Center in Boise, Idaho. Fresno State had reached the final for the second straight season, beating Idaho 4-0 in the quarterfinals and Hawai'i 4-0 in the semis. The loss ends Fresno State's season while Boise State automatically qualified for the NCAA tournament.
Boise State took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Clancy Shields and Luke Shields downed senior Jakub Cech and freshman Mirko Zapletal 8-3 on court No. 1. Piotr Dilaj and Steve Robertson clinched the point when they beat freshman Taylor Leiby and sophomore Rudolf Siwy 8-2 on court No. 3
In singles, the `Dogs had opportunities on three courts before the match was clinched. Siwy took the first set 7-6 in his match against Clancy Shields at No. 2. Senior Charles Irie took the first set 6-3 and was tied 5-5 with Piotr Dilaj on No. 4 and Zapletal won his first set before dropping the second against Kean Feeder.
Boise State's Steve Robertson clinched the match on court No. 6, beating freshman Flavio Molinedo 6-3, 6-4.
Fresno State finished the season with a 13-10 record. Cech and Irie end their careers with outstanding numbers. Cech finishes with 71 career singles wins, good for 16th all-time in Fresno State history. Irie completes his career with 68 singles victories, tying him for 17th all-time in program history.
Cech earned first-team all-WAC honors in singles and doubles, and Zapletal was named to the first-team all-WAC in doubles, as well. Zapletal and Siwy were named to the second-team all-WAC in singles, while Irie and freshman Tejesvi Veerepalli were named to the second-team all-WAC in doubles.
