Bulldogs Take Down Matadors in Tight Contest, 7-6

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - In a game that saw 19 total pitchers the Fresno State (18-17, 4-2) Bulldogs came out victorious in a tight contest against the Cal State Northridge (12-19) Matadors by a 7-6 score Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field. Junior outfielder Ozzie Lewis drove in the winning run hitting a single up the middle scoring Storey from third base.
The Matadors jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning with four runs. The first run scored when CJ Belanger singled to center field bringing in Jonathan Sakuri and two scored at 3-0 when Jorge Andrade Jr. hit a home run to left field. The last run scored when Amiel Traynum singled up the middle advancing the runner from third.
The Bulldogs needed to make up some ground fast and they did just that by loading the bases with no outs in the top of the second inning. Sophomore Erik Wetzel who is hitting with a .359 batting average brought the first run in on a single to right field. Loren Storey brought in the next run with another single to right field at 4-2. The last run advanced home on a Brian Lapin sacrifice fly at 4-3.
Fresno State tied the game up at 4-4 when Alan Ahmady hit his sixth home run of the season. Ahmady is now tied with Storey in home runs on the season. The Bulldogs took the lead in the top of the fourth inning at 5-4 when junior center fielder Brian Lapin singled to center field.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning Fresno State found trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Matadors could only grab two runs in that inning on a Jowen-James Murray-Thornton single to right field but took the lead 6-5.
The Bulldogs tied things up at 6-6 in the top of the sixth inning when Steve Susdorf singled up the middle bringing in Storey. Lapin was following behind on the play but was thrown out at home for the last out. Fresno State scored the last run of the game at 7-6 when hero Ozzie Lewis hit a single up the middle scoring Storey from third base.
With the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth the Matadors were threatening to score but Brandon Burke and the Bulldogs managed to get out of trouble. A total of 11 Fresno State pitchers saw action giving up five earned runs on 13 hits. Jason Breckley earned his seventh save of the season.
The Bulldogs will continue action to play in a three-game series against conference opponent Nevada at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The following two games are scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. start on Friday and a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday.
