Fresno State Holds Off Nevada, 7-6

RENO, Nev. - On a Thursday night at Peccole Park in Reno, Nev. the Fresno State (19-17, 5-2) Bulldogs captured their fifth conference victory against the Nevada (19-16, 3-4) Wolfpack by a 7-6 score. Fresno State still sits in first place in the WAC with a 5-2 record. Junior Clayton Allison threw six and one-third innings only giving up seven hits.
Fresno State jumped on the board first in the top of the second inning when Tom Mendonca hit his fifth home run of the year at 1-0.
With two Bulldog batters on base at first and second in the top of the third inning Brian Lapin was able to bring in Erik Wetzel from second base on a single up the middle at 2-0. In the next at bat Steve Susdorf drilled a rocket off the centerfield wall tripling and bringing in two more runs at 4-0. Another run scored when Ozzie Lewis singled bringing in Susdorf from third. The last run of the inning finally scored when Tom Mendonca hit his sixth home run of the season. The Bulldogs were a double away from hitting for the cycle in that inning.
Nevada managed to get on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning scoring one run on two hits. Catcher Konrad Schmidt doubled and later scored on third baseman Jason Rodriguez' sacrifice fly. In the seventh inning the Wolfpack scored two runs on three hits. Two runs scored on first baseman Shaun Kort's two RBI double at 7-3.
Nevada cut the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning when left fielder Terry Walsh hit a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall scoring three runs to make it a one run game. The inning was kept alive when right fielder Matt Suleski hit a single to left field but reliever Brandon Burke struck out Tyson Jaquez in a crucial at bat which captured the one run victory at 7-6.
Mendonca went 3-for-4 with two home runs, one single and three RBI's. Steve Susdorf went 1-for-3 with a triple, two runs and two RBI's. The Bulldogs combined for six hits on 31 at bats while Nevada tallied 15 hits in 39 at bats.
Series action between the two teams will continue tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
