FRESNO, Calif. - Less than 48 hours after the 2007 NFL Draft ended that saw four Fresno State players drafted, three more Bulldogs are fulfilling childhood dreams. Receiver Joe Fernandez, defensive tackle Louis Leonard and fullback Roshon Vercher all signed NFL free agent contracts.
Fernandez, who finished his career with 16 touchdown receptions, seventh-most in Bulldog history, signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Fernandez, a four-time Academic All-WAC selection, is one of the top student-athletes on campus.
Vercher signed with the Arizona Cardinals after finishing his career having been the lead blocker for four consecutive 1,000-yard running backs, including Dwayne Wright, a fourth round selection of the Buffalo Bills.
Leonard was a physical defensive lineman for the Dogs who battled injuries in his career. When healthy he was a dominating defensive figure. He signed with the San Diego Chargers.
The trio that signed free agent contracts join four Bulldogs - Marcus McCauley (Minnesota), Paul Williams (Tennessee), Wright, and Chris Denman (Tampa Bay), who were drafted over the weekend.
"It's great that these guys will get an opportunity to fulfill their dreams," said head coach Pat Hill. "We're very pleased for them and wish them the best of luck in their NFL career."
