FRESNO, Calif. - Third-ranked sophomore Melanie Gloria got off to a good start during the NCAA singles first round, beating Georgia Tech's Kristen Flower 6-2, 6-2 on Wednesday in Athens, Ga. Freshman Renata Kucerkova, however, lost 6-1, 6-3 to No. 2-ranked Megan Falcon of LSU.
Gloria played solid throughout the match en route to her 37th-overall victory of the season and her second of the year over Flower. Gloria went 22-1 in dual matches this season.
"Melanie dominated the whole match," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "Flower didn't control many points and Melanie served well with a couple of aces on both first and second serves."
Gloria will face North Carolina's Katrina Tsang on Thursday morning. The time of the match has yet to be determined.
Gloria and sophomore Tinesta Rowe will open their doubles first round matchup against Tennessee's Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsofia Zubor on Thursday. The match will most likely begin in the afternoon after singles matchups have been determined.
