Avinelis Earns GCAA All-American Scholar
FRESNO, Calif. - The Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division I and II have been announced by the GCAA All-America Scholars Committee. Fresno State's Gunnar Avinelis has been honored with the prestigious All-America Scholar Award.
Different sports have varying criteria for this honor. The men's golf All-America Scholar Award may be the toughest one to earn. Student-Athletes aren't eligible until after their junior year. In other words, the Student-Athlete must be well into their major before they are eligible. Added to that is the fact that they have to play in 70 percent of the competitions, they must average 75 or better, and they must have a minimum GPA of 3.2.
Avinelis is only the 17th Bulldog since its inception in 1989 to earn this award. He may have been at the head of this year's list because he averaged 3.94 and averaged 74.76. He graduated as the No. 1 Marketing Student in the Sid Craig School of Business.
"Gunnar was the model student-athlete," said head coach Mike Watney. "Not only was he an outstanding scholar and excellent golfer, he had the character, integrity, and leadership qualities that definitely set him apart from most people. Everyone at Fresno State will miss him but I know he will continue to do great things in his life."
Other Bulldogs who have won the award:
David Sutherland
Tim Wilcox
Per Nyman (twice)
Geoff Griffin
John Barrington (twice)
David Burroughs
Gary Glazier
Josh Watney (twice)
Dustin Smith
Ryan Carter (twice)
