USA Wins Title, Mackin, Canada Finish Strong

FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State junior pitcher Robin Mackin helped lead Canada to an 8-2 record in the Canada Cup, concluding Sunday evening. Former Bulldogs Laura Berg and Lovie Jung helped lead the United States to a perfect 10-0 victory and the championship of the 14th annual tournament.
After leading Canada to a 6-0 record in the Round Robin Games, Mackin went 1-1 in the circle for Canada, as they went 2-2 in the Championship round. Mackin's win was a four-hitter against Japan (Desno Club), striking out eight batters in the 7-0 victory. Mackin came in relief against Japan in Canada's final game and picked up the loss.
Team USA went 10-0 and won the 14th annual Canada Cup.
Tairia Flowers had an impressive tournament hitting a team-high .650 (13-for-20) with 10 RBI and three homeruns. In nine games played, she was perfect at first base with several key defensive plays to keep runners off first. For her great accomplishments, she was awarded the MVP of the 14th Annual Canada Cup.
Jennie Finch also received the Lori Sippel Award, for the tournament's best pitcher. Finch led the team with a 3-0 record in four starts. With a 0.56 ERA, Finch allowed only one run in 16.0 innings pitched. She threw 20 strikeouts She gave up five hits in 16.0 innings pitched, hurling 20 strikeouts.
Next up for the team is the KFC World Cup of Softball where they will take on Argentina, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Japan and Venezuela. They will be looking to defend their 2006 title.
