FRESNO, Calif.- - The Fresno State women's soccer team began preparation for the 2007 season on Wednesday with the first day of practice. The Bulldogs are coming into the season as the reigning 2006 WAC regular season champions after going 13-5-3 and 6-0-1 in the conference play.
After the first day of training, Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said he was pleased with this teams effort in preparation for the upcoming season.
"The overall fitness of our team is pretty good," Springthorpe said. "Our returning players worked hard this summer and it shows in the early fitness with our run this morning and some of the things we did this afternoon. There is talent out there and I can see the desire in them. They work hard. It was a good first day."
The most pleasing part of practice to Springthorpe was the leadership of his eight seniors, Andrea Alires, Megan Tennant, Aubrey Tennant, Andrea Salvador, Chelsea Davis, Christina Gilbert, Brittany Thomas and Amanda Reyes.
Through out practice they were seen encouraging the younger players in all the drills and conditioning exercises.
"Our eight seniors have done a great job," Springthorpe said. "They are supportive of the new players here. They are leading the pack in our runs and doing the things you'd hope seniors and captains would do and that is lead your team."
The Bulldogs play two exhibition games before opening the season on August 31 in Bulldog Stadium against UC Irvine.
The first exhibition game is Saturday, August 18 at Fresno Pacific at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on 790 ESPN Radio. On August 25, the Bulldogs host Cal Poly at 7 p.m.
