Fresno State Plays Exhibition Game at Fresno Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. -- - The Fresno State women's soccer team gets its first taste of competition when they play the first of two exhibition games on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Fresno Pacific. The game can be heard live on 790 ESPN Radio, The Deuce.
"We are excited to play against Fresno Pacific this Saturday night," Bulldog coach Steve Springthorpe said. "The last few years we have squared off in a preseason exhibition and the games have been extremely competitive. The community has come out to support both teams and there seems to always be a huge interest in the game."
In last year's exhibition game at Bulldog Stadium, Fresno State defeated Fresno Pacific 2-0 thanks to an Allison Schroeder goal 41 seconds into the game. Brittany Thomas added the games final goal in the 57th minute.
This year Springthorpe welcomes a group of 15 newcomers to his team that won the WAC regular season championship last season. Saturday will provide a good test to see how his team plays together for the first time.
"We look forward to getting out on the field and seeing where our players are after three full days of training," Springthorpe said. "With such a large group of incoming new players this game will give us an opportunity to get them some playing time and the opportunity to play with our returning players instead of having to compete against them."
Returning for the Bulldogs this season is Andrea Alires, Chelsea Davis, Christina Gilbert, Amanda Reyes, Andrea Salvador, Megan Tennant, Aubrey Tennant, Brittany Thomas, Selena Gill, Nicole Gutierrez, Ali Sill, Lauren West and Alyssa Mandas.
Gilbert, Gutierrez and Aubrey Tennant are the three team captains for the 2007 season.
Fresno Pacific finished the 2006 season with a 6-9-2 record but the program has 15 returning players off last year's team including Amy Kampf and Ashley Sherr, who each scored seven goals last season.
Following Saturday's contest, Fresno State returns to the field on August 25 to host Cal-Poly in the team's final exhibition game at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium.
