FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's soccer team plays its final exhibition game on Saturday at 7 p.m. in Bulldog Stadium when they play host to Cal Poly. All tickets for Saturday's match are $1.
Although this is only an exhibition meeting, the two schools are very familiar with each other as they have played 10 times in the last 12 years in regular season play. Cal Poly does lead the overall series 7-3 after beating Fresno State 1-0 in overtime last year in San Luis Obispo. The Mustangs have won the last three meetings.
"Cal Poly is good," Fresno State coach Steve Springthorpe said. "They received some Top 20 votes in the region and they are always very tough. I think it is a good exhibition match of two teams that are very similar in style as well as where we finished ranked last year. It is a good exhibition match to start the season."
The Bulldogs tied Fresno Pacific 2-2 in an exhibition match last Saturday. Nicole Gutierrez and Chelsea Davis tallied the two goals for Fresno State.
Saturday's contest will give Springthorpe and his staff one last chance to fiddle with the line up before the season officially kicks off on August 31.
"We are going to get a chance to play everybody," Springthorpe said. "We will treat this a little more as a regular match for us and try to identify our starters and players that will come off the bench. We'll probably start somewhat of a starting lineup that we hope to start the season with then rotate some people around."
Fresno State officially opens the season on Friday, August 31, at Bulldog Stadium against UC Irvine. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
"Join the State - Fresno State!" - Fresno State Soccer opens the season with an exhibition game this Saturday, August 25 against Cal Poly starting at 7 p.m. All tickets are just $1.
