FRESNO, Calif. - Jay Udwadia has decided to remain at Fresno State as head coach of the men's tennis program. Udwadia had accepted a position as associate head coach at Pepperdine last week, but will now remain with the Bulldogs.
After giving his decision much thought, Udwadia realized his heart was at Fresno State.
"I truly value being a head coach here at Fresno State," Udwadia said. "I hold the utmost respect for Pepperdine's Adam Steinberg, and I wouldn't have accepted an associate head coaching position under any other circumstances. But, I've decided to stay because I love coaching here and I love this community."
Udwadia is entering his fourth season at Fresno State. He led the Bulldogs to the finals of the Western Athletic Conference tournament the past two years and has vaulted the team to as high as No. 41 in the national rankings.
"We are certainly pleased that Jay had a change of heart and decided to remain with the program and continue his career here at Fresno State," said Betsy Mosher, Fresno State's Senior Associate Athletics Director for Administration and Program Integrity. "I know his student-athletes will be excited to hear the news. We are looking forward to having Jay on campus."
Udwadia has coached student-athletes in all three of college tennis' major championships, coached a WAC Player of the Year and had three players in the top-30 of last season's final West Region rankings.
