Paes Pulls Upset in Second Round at Cal Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Junior Bruna Paes found her rhythm on Friday at the Cal Invitational in Berkeley, Calif., beating No. 83 Lauren Lui of Northwestern in straight sets during the round of 16 in the blue singles draw. Paes knocked off Liu, the draw's No. 1 seed, after defeating Ashley Pane of Santa Clara in the round of 32.
"This was one of the best wins of Bruna's career," head coach Simon Thibodeau said. "She's had some other big wins as well, but this is the type of win we need to reach our goals as a team. Everyone needs to step up and Bruna did that today."
Sophomore Vanessa Heroux also won both of her singles matches on Friday. Heroux topped Carmen Pham of Santa Clara, 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round. In the round of 16, Heroux beat Arizona's Katie Orletsky in three sets.
Junior Danon Beatty won her first round match, beating Santa Clara's Lindsay McBride 6-2, 6-0. She then lost to No. 8 Georgia Rose of Northwestern. Junior Tinesta Rowe lost in her first round match to Northwestern's Nazlie Ghazai and beat San Francisco's Cecilia Gratian in straight sets in a consolation match. Thibodeau found many positives from Friday's competition and believes the Bulldogs are improving everday.
"Danon really gave Georgia Rose a good fight in the first set," Thibodeau said. "Overall, I thought we played tough today in all our matches."
In doubles, Beatty and Heroux advanced to the second round after beating Calvo and Hoath of Saint Mary's 8-4.
The Bulldogs continue action in the Cal Invitational on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Hellman Tennis Center.
