Gloria, Rowe Flex Muscles at Cal Winter Invitational

FRESNO, Calif. - Juniors Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe continued to flex their muscles at the Cal Winter Invitational on Saturday in Berkeley, Calif. The No. 1-ranked Gloria and Rowe topped Hoath and Strijbis of Saint Mary's 8-4 and each won in singles as well during the second day of the hidden dual.
The Bulldogs won three of four in doubles against Saint Mary's and three of eight singles matches against Cal.
"We did some positive things today," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "To play so close with a team like Cal that made it to the final four last year is a good sign. We fought hard but we still have much to improve on."
Cal, which is ranked No. 6, boasts 2006 NCAA Champion and two-time ITA All-American Champion Susie Babos and is very familiar with Fresno State. The Bulldogs beat Cal in the 2006 NCAA second round and this year is the second straight season in which the Bulldogs have participated in the Winter Invitational.
Gloria beat No. 10 Babos again on Saturday, winning 6-3, 6-3. Last year, Gloria also beat Babos during the Winter Invitational. Rowe beat Claire Ilcinkas in a three-setter, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Junior Bruna Paes also won, beating Daron Moore 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles, Kucerkova and Petukhova beat Calvo and Charlot, while Haskett and Paes defeated Melec and Young.
The Bulldogs will face Cal in doubles and Nevada in singles on Sunday in the final day of the Winter Invitational.
