'Dogs Continue Fall Season at ITA Regional

FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State Men's Tennis Team will continue the fall season against some of the best players from the West-North Region. The ITA Northern Cal Championships will be held at the Hellman Tennis Complex at Cal beginning Friday.
The tournament marks the first time this season the entire team will be competing in the same event. The 'Dogs will have four seeded players in the 128-person singles bracket and one ranked duo in the 64-team doubles bracket.
"This will be a good tournament to test the strength of our team against some good competition from our region," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "We've had good results the past three weeks, and we're looking forward to proving ourselves against the best players in the West-North region."
Fresh off his dazzling performance at the ITA All-American Championships, senior Rudolf Siwy has earned the No. 2 seed in the tournament. Mirko Zapletal is the No. 7 seed, Bulldog Classic champion Rikus de Villiers will debut as the No. 9 seed, and Tejesvi Veerepalli will begin the tournament as the No. 17 seed.
The ITA Northern Cal Championship features a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles draw. A 64-player singles consolation draw will be held for competitors who lose their first round match. There will also be one round of doubles consolation play.
Siwy, Zapletal, and de Villiers received first-round byes, and will begin singles play in the round of 64.
Zapletal and de Villiers also received a bye as the No. 4 seed in the doubles bracket as they will begin in the round of 32 on Saturday. All doubles matches will begin on the second day of the tournament.
Winners of the singles and doubles championships will earn an automatic bid to the second of three national tournaments, the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 6-9 in Charlottesville, Va.
In addition to Fresno State, other schools represented in the regional championships include: Cal, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, St. Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis, and Washington.
