Bulldogs Roll in Doubles at ITA Northwest Regional

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team continued stellar doubles play at the 2008 ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the campus of Stanford University.
The tournament's No. 1 seeded doubles team Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova advanced to Sunday's round of 16 after a dominating performance over Calvo/Strijbis of St. Mary's. Kucerkova/Petukhova did not surrender a game as they picked up the win 8-0.
Melanie Gloria and Tinesta Rowe played just as strong as their Bulldog teammates in the round of 32. The No. 2 seeded Gloria/Rowe defeated Malovic/Smith of Washington 8-1 to claim a spot in the round of 16.
"Our top two doubles teams are playing flawless tennis right now," said head coach Simon Thibodeau. "They picked up big wins and will be ready to go tomorrow."
Five Bulldogs began the day in the round of 32 of the singles bracket. Petukhova and Gloria were the only `Dogs able to advance to the round of 16, as Laura Pola, Rowe, and Kucerkova battled but were unable to pick up victories.
Gloria defeated Stephany Chang of Cal 6-0, 6-2, while Petukhova was victorious over Jennifer Yen of Stanford 6-3, 6-0. Gloria then advanced to Sunday's quarterfinal after beating Veronica Li of Stanford 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. Petukhova dropped her round of 16 match to No. 65 Bojana Bobusic of Cal 6-4, 6-4.
"We competed well in singles and had a lot of chances," Thibodeau said. "We know what we need to work on and will continue to improve."
Bruna Paes was victorious in her consolation round match with a straight set win over Kimmi Cox of Santa Clara 6-3, 6-3.
The `Dogs will be back on the court Sunday with Gloria competing in the quarterfinals of the singles tournament. Gloria and Rowe along with teammates Kucerkova and Petukhova will be featured in the quarterfinals of the doubles tournament.
