Siwy and de Villiers Advance in Singles at ITA Regional

FRESNO Calif. - The Bulldog men's tennis team was back in action Saturday at the 2008 ITA Northern Cal Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of Cal.
Senior Rudolf Siwy and sophomore Rikus de Villiers were featured in the Round of 32 of the main draw in the singles tournament, while Flavio Mollinedo and Taylor Leiby along with Mirko Zapletal and de Villiers competed in the doubles tournament.
"It was a good day of competition, we won all the matches we played," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "Rudy and Rikus are playing well in singles, and it is exciting to see them getting deeper in the draw."
Siwy faced off against Joel Kinkaid of Portland to begin the Round of 32. Siwy cruised to an easy straight-set victory 6-3, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's Round of 16.
After winning the Bulldog Classic singles championship, his first event as a Bulldog, de Villiers continued strong play with a victory over Achim Christner of St. Mary's, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, to join Siwy in the Round of 16.
"Rikus fought hard to pull out the three set victory," Udwadia said. "I'm looking forward to see our team back on the court tomorrow."
In doubles action Mollinedo and Leiby began the day with a match against Campbell/Davis of Gonzaga. The Bulldog duo advanced to the Round of 32 with an 8-5 win. Mollinedo/Leiby continued play in the round of 32 with an 8-5 win over Hart/Erickson of Portland State to advance to Sunday's Round of 16.
Zapletal and de Villiers received a first-round bye and began play in the Round of 32. The `Dogs were matched up with Kurdadze/Schleining of Portalnd, and dominated the match 8-3.
Zapletal was also featured in the singles consolation bracket and picked up the win over Torin Ching of USF, 6-3, 6-1 to continue through the competition.
The `Dogs will be back on the court Sunday with Siwy and de Villiers competing in the round of 16 of singles. Mollinedo/Leiby and de Villiers/Zapletal will be in action during the round of 16 of the doubles tournament. Zapletal will also compete in the round of 32 of the consolation singles bracket.
