Siwy Advances to Semis at ITA Regional Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The Bulldog men's tennis team continued action at the 2008 ITA Northern Cal Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex on the campus of Cal. Bulldog senior Rudolf Siwy continued his impressive fall season with two victories on Sunday to advance to Monday's semi-final.
In the round of 16, Siwy was leading Marco Verdasco of Oregon in the first set 3-0, before Verdasco retired due to injury. Siwy then faced No. 66 Richard Wire of Stanford. Wire was able to take the first set, with Siwy roaring back to take the second and third sets, and the match 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 to claim a spot in the semifinals.
"I'm proud of Rudy for the way he battled back after dropping the first set," said head coach Jay Udwadia. "It's good to see Rudy continue to play solid in singles, and represent Fresno State in the semifinals."
After winning two matches to get to the round of 16, sophomore Rikus de Villiers was matched up with the tournament's top seed and the nation's fourth ranked player, Alex Clayton of Stanford. De Villiers put up a fight, but was unable to take the match as Clayton won 6-1, 6-0.
Zapletal was still alive in the singles consolation bracket. The Bulldog concluded the tournament winning his round of 32 match against Alex Daruty of Nevada 6-4, 6-2.
Siwy will represent the Bulldogs Monday in the semi-finals of the singles championships. The Bulldog senior will face Bradley Klahn of Stanford at 12:00 p.m. PST.
